The Department of Archaeology and Museology of Shandong University has two majors, namely "Archaeology" and “Cultural Heritage and Museology ".
Archaeology
As a key discipline in provincial level, Archaeology is one of the most rapid growing discipline in Shandong University since the reform and opening-up. It equipped with many teaching and scientific research platforms such as International Joint Laboratory with the Ministry of Education specialized in Environmental and Social Archaeology, archaeological experimental teaching demonstration center in national level, Environmental and Social Archaeology Innovation Introduction Base which is listed in “Project 111” jointly initiated by Ministry of Education and Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, provincial key research base of Humanities Social Sciences. The department has master's degree program and doctoral program of "Archaeology" which is first-level discipline and professional master's degree program of " Cultural Heritage and Museology ". The department has signed cooperation agreements with more than 20 overseas universities and research institutions, including Yale university, University of Toronto, University of Cambridge, Leiden University and Kyushu University.
Archaeology, as a traditional dominant discipline, has its research directions including Prehistoric Archaeology, Shang and Zhou Dynasties Archaeology, Han and Tang Dynasties Archaeology, Song and Yuan Dynasties Archaeology, and many specialized archaeology directions, such as Plant Archaeology, Animal Archaeology, Environmental Archaeology and so on. At present, it has built a high-level archaeological laboratory with a complete range of categories, which has produced extensive and positive influences at home and abroad.
At present, the discipline has 29 full-time teaching and research personnel (10 professors) and has second-level disciplines such as Archaeological Theory and History, Prehistoric Archaeology, Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties Archaeology, and Scientific and Technological Archaeology. Archaeology comes top in the first-level discipline ranking released by the Ministry of Education. In the future, relying on the international joint laboratory specialized in Environmental and Social Archaeology, we will further take advantage of the Archaeology discipline, and established global university alliance for cultural heritage protection. In order to meet the demands of internationalization, high-end orientation, we will reform in terms of system and mechanism, and lead the way in talents cultivation, scientific research, social service and cultural inheritance and innovation.
For career development after graduation, students can not only continue their studies in the fields of archaeology research, cultural heritage research, comparative study of ancient Chinese and foreign cultures, but also work in government, research institutes, educational departments, museums, and administrative organs related to cultural heritage at all levels. This major offers a bachelor's degree in History.
Cultural Heritage and Museology
The discipline of Cultural Heritage and Museology began to recruit students in 2012, which is an emerging discipline combining theory and practice. In 2016, museum undertaking became a national strategy, and the discipline of Cultural Heritage and Museology gained huge space for development. Discipline of Cultural Heritage and Museology of Shandong University takes serving the development of Chinese museums as the goal of discipline development, grasping the spirit of the times, and cultivating professional talents.
The discipline of Cultural Heritage and Museology has strong faculty team, and complete curriculum system, actively grasping the frontier trends. The main research directions involved include: theory and method of cultural heritage and museology, research of cultural relics and material culture, conservation and restoration of cultural relics, cultural heritage and village planning, museum curation and design, new museology, etc.
Academic cooperation between universities and teaching and research institutions of the dominant discipline of Archaeology provide an excellent development platform for the education and research, international cooperation and social service. At present, the discipline has established good cooperative relations with the Palace Museum, Shandong Museum, Qingdao Museum, Qingzhou Museum and other institutions which have become a stable teaching and practice base for the discipline of Cultural Heritage and Museology. Recently, the annual "BBS for young museologists" organized by this discipline has led the internal communication fashion and won unanimous praise.
For career development after graduation, students can not only continue their studies in the fields of cultural heritage protection, heritage planning and museology, but also serve in museums, art galleries, heritage and cultural relics departments and engage in relevant practical work on the basis of their existing knowledge and skills. This major has a master's degree in "Cultural Relics and Museums", and it offers a bachelor's degree in history.
